Puthari Thiruvappana at Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple is held on Vrischikam 16, 16th day in Vrischikam Month of Malayalam calendar. In 2014, Puthari Thiruvappana date is December 2.
The festival would begin with customary rituals at the Madamana Illam here at 11.30 a.m. There would be a Muthappan ‘vellattam’ performance in the evening. ‘Kalasam ezhunnallath’ at night would be followed by fireworks at midnight.
Processions led by various illums arrive at the the Madappura. By tradition the processions starts by the procession led by a male member of the “Thayyil” clan of Thayyil, Kannur from the family home to the main altar of the temple, where he offers a ‘Pooja’ (prayer) to the God.
The ‘Muthappan Thiruvappana’ would begin at 5 a.m. on the next day (Vrischikham 17). Colourful processions, traditional percussion concert, a Kathakali performance and other cultural programmes would also be organised in connection with the festival.
The ritualistic enactment of both the characters of Sree Muthappan, Thiruvappana and Vellattam, is performed daily in the early morning and in the evening. Puthari Thiruvappana festival, conducted on 16 Vrichikam (this Malayalam day corresponds to 1 or 2 December), is the first Thiruvappana of the temple year. It is associated with the harvesting season of the region. The last Thiruvappana of the temple year is on 30 Kanni every year.
Thiruvappana is not performed on the following days
1. Thulam 1st to Vrischikam 15th every year.
2. Amaavasi (new moon) day of Karkkitakam and Thulam.
3. “Nira” day of the temple.
4. When there is a death in the Madappura family.
