Puri Rath Yatra or Puri Jagannath Rathyatra is the world famous chariot festival held in Puri Jagannath Temple, Orissa. The chariot festival is held in second day of bright fortnight in Ashad month (Ashad Shukla Dwitiya) as per Oriya calendar. In 2010, Jagannath Rath Yatra date is July 13, Tuesday. During this yatra, idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are taken out for procession for nearby Gundicha Temple where the idols stay for nine days.
Bahuda Yatra, the return journey of chariot festival, begins on the tenth day from Gundicha Temple to Puri Jagannath temple. The sanctity, significance, mahatmya or importance of Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra is mentioned in the Skanda Purana. The concept of Rath Yatra (chariot festival) is stated in the Kathopanishad.
