Mylapore Mundaka Kanni Amman Temple Aadi Velli celebrations in Chennai. Mundaka Kanni Amman Temple is a temple dedicated to Ma Shakti Devi who is in the form of Mundaka Kanni Amman(Mariamman) is situated in Mylapore in Chennai. The temple is one of the most famous shrines of Mariamman.
Mundakanniamman is the presiding deity of the temple. She is a form of Ma Renukadevi (The holy mother of Lord Parashurama), and one among the Saptakannis.
Aadi Velli, an important festival in the Tamil Hindu calendar, is celebrated on Fridays in the Tamil month of Aadi (mid-July to mid-August). Every Friday in the month of Aadi is special for the Goddesses. During this month, it is believed that Ma MahaMariamma is manifested to bring peace and prosperity to the world. The festival pays homage to the Goddess in her diverse forms like Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati, seeking her blessings for prosperity, health, and happiness.
The 1st Friday of Aadi is dedicated to Goddess Swarnambika, a form of Goddess Parvati, who blesses with wealth and prosperity. (18 July 2025)
2nd Friday of Aadi is devoted to Goddess AngalaAmman. Worshipping her can gain protection from evil powers and negatively. (25 July 2025)
3rd Friday is associated with Goddess Kalikambal, a powerful avatar of Goddess Parvati. She has the power to bestow good health and courage. (1 August 2025)
4th Friday is dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi Amman, who bestows good relationships. Worship her to enjoy harmonious relationships and to overcome obstacles in your life. (8 August 2025)
5th and last Aadi Friday honours Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Overall Prosperity. (15 August 2025)
At Mundagakanni Amman temple, Mylapore during Aadi Fridays, more than 100 devotees used to come early in the morning in order to offer milk to the Snake Gods and decorate the idols with kumkum and turmeric. The first and third Fridays of this month are considered to be very auspicious and devotees flock to this temple to get a glimpse of their favourite Deity.
Outside the temple, a portion of the road was blocked to enable the women to make Pongal, devotees would also prepare Prasad items like koozh and curd rice and after showing it to the goddess, it would be distributed to the devotees. Even during ancient period, people belonging to Tamil Nadu used to offer Koozh to the holy Amman. Ragi Koozh would give chillness to our body, and it refreshes our mind also. Moreover, it is being offered by the divine mother itself.
Aadi month is meant for worshipping Amman, and most of the family functions like marriages and Grihapravesam are not held. Particularly new business ventures would not be started during the month of Aadi. Donating money or food to the charitable houses is done especially during Aadi month.
