Mauna Panchami Vrat (Mouna Panchami Puja), Shravan Panchami

Mauna Panchami vrat is observed on Sawan Panchami day. In 2020, Mouna Panchami date is July 25. Mauna Panchami puja is widely observed in North India, especially during Shrabani Mela, held at Deoghar Bhaidyanath Dham.

Moun means quietness or silence. In Hindu culture and way of living, Maun has special significance. On the day of Mouna Panchami, Naga Devatas (Serpent Gods) are worshipped. Naga Suktam or Sarpa Suktam is recited during the Puja. Some special recipes and fruits are offered to the Serpent Gods.

Mauna Panchami is also celebrated as Naga Panchami or Manasa Devi Ashtanag Puja or Garuda Panchami. A similar festival called ‘Guga Navami is celebrated in some places of Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
