Markandeya Rishi was born in the clan of Bhrigu Rishi. He is mentioned in many Puranas as the great devotee of Lord Shiva and Vishnu. There is a Purana with his name ‘Markandeya Purana’. It is a conversation between Markandeya and Jaimini Maharshi.

Markandeya Rushi is also mentioned number of times in Bhagavata Purana and in the Mahabharata. There is a holy place dedicated to Bhakta Markandeya which is called ‘Markandeya Tirtha’ on a trekking route to Yamunotri Temple in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand.
