Mark Twain on Kumbh Mela

Mark Twain on Kumbh Mela…? It is a bit confusing one, but yes, Mark Twain has written very interesting things about Kumbh Mela as a part of his travelogue about India. Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known with his pen name, Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist.

Mark Twain visited India in 1895. When he was on his way to write his travelogue on India, he revealed some interesting observations… Here is the extract of his words on Kumbh Mela….

“It is wonderful, the power of a faith like that, that can make multitudes upon multitudes of the old and the young and frail enter without hesitation or complaint upon such incredible journeys and endure the resultant miseries without repining.”

He further added “It is done in love, or it is done in fear; I do not know which it is. No matter what the impulse is, the act born of it is beyond imagination, marvelous to our kind of people, the cold whites…”

It is to note that Maha Kumbh Mela 2013 has begun in Allahabad Prayag Sangam on January 14 and will end on March 10. It is the largest religious gathering in the world.
