Significance and Observances

Goddess Lakshmi: The festival honors Goddess Mahalaxmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. It is believed that she visits homes during this time to bless families with prosperity and remove their sorrows.

Cleanliness Rituals: A key aspect of Manabasa Gurubar is the emphasis on cleanliness. Households are thoroughly cleaned and decorated, as it is widely believed that Goddess Lakshmi prefers to visit clean homes. Women often create decorative patterns called jhoti chita on their floors to invite the goddess.

.Cultural Context: The festival is rooted in the ancient scripture known as the Mahalaxmi Purana, which narrates a story involving a low-caste woman named Shriya. Her devotion to Goddess Lakshmi leads to her being ostracized by society, highlighting issues of caste discrimination and gender inequality. The narrative emphasizes that true devotion transcends social barriers and critiques practices of untouchability.

Historical Background

The origins of Manabasa Gurubar can be traced back to the Laxmi Puran, where the goddess’s interactions with Shriya challenge societal norms. After being expelled from the Jagannath Temple by Balaram, the elder brother of Lord Jagannath, due to her caste status, Shriya’s plight leads to a curse that forces Balaram and his brother to confront their prejudices. This story serves as a powerful commentary on discrimination and advocates for equality.
