Mailam Murugan Temple is located on top of a hill fifteen kilometers from Tindivanam and thirty kilometers from Pondicherry.

Mailam is a small village in Villupuram district. The temple here is a small hill temple. It was attached to a village on the Coromandel coast. Near Pondicherry. It was a village donated to Brahmins.

The history of the site begins with the end of Surapadman’s cruel reign. According to Surapurana, Surapadman fought against Lord Muruga using all his Asuramayobhaya techniques. Legend has it that after this, Surapadman had to shed tears to accept himself as the vehicle of Lord Muruga. Legend has it that Lord Muruga, who was moved by a tearful prayer, ordered him to meditate with great determination on the banks of river Varaha near the Peacock Hill. Also, legend states that when Surapadman took the form of a peacock, he requested Lord Muruga to stay permanently on the same hill and bless him. Local history says that Lord Muruga agreed to this and hence the hill came to be known as Mayilamalai and the place came to be known as Mayilam. On the top of the hill the temple was built in a grand manner by the pontiff of Bommaipuram. The monastery located at the foot of the hill looks after the administration of the temple. These administrations have provided necessary facilities to the public and visitors.

Another legend says that when Soorapadman was defeated by Lord Muruga in battle, he changed his mind, worshipped the Lord, came to this place and performed severe penance in the form of a peacock. As it was a peacock shaped hill, Surapadman prayed that the hill should be named Mayurachalam and Lord Muruga should stay here any day and bless the devotees. Then your wish will be fulfilled!” and disappeared. Surapadman stayed there till the time Balachita performed penance. It is said that this name ‘Mayurachalam’ later changed to Mayalam.
