Lochandas Thakura

Sri Lochan Das Thakura was born in the year 1523 AD in Burdwan district in west Bengal in a pious vaidya family, on the banks of the Ajay River. He was very mischievous at his younger age, and resembles similar to child Krishna, and his parents were very fond of him, and provided all the toys and play things to him.

Lochan Das studied very well, and got good marks, and he was a devotee of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu from his young age. Lochan Das was married at a very young age, and his wife remained with her parents for some years, since she was very young. When Lochan Das arrived to his in laws house at Amedpur, he was warmly welcomed by his in laws. Similar to Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, he treated his wife as the divine mother, Mata Kali Devi, and gave great respect to her.

Sri Narahari Sarkar Thakur, who was the friend of Sri Chaitanya, was very affectionate to Lochan Das and made him as his disciple and a saint. Lochan Das served his guru in a pleasing manner in Srikhanda, West Bengal. His guru taught him to write devotional songs on Lord Krishna and asked him to write Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s life history. Lochan Das obeyed his guru’s orders, and wrote the ‘Chaitanya Charita’, which is also called as Chaitanya Bhagavata, and also wrote and sung devotional songs in praise of Sri Nityananda, also known as Nitai.

Lochan Das further says that those who didn’t want to worship Sri Chaitanya and Nityananda are not considered as the devotees of Lord Krishna, since both Chaitanya and Nitai are the divine incarnations of Lord Krishna. Lochan Das Ṭhakur attained Samadhi in the year 1589 AD. His Samadhi Shrine is found at his hometown in West Bengal.

Let us worship the great saint and be blessed.
