Once, Pramatha gana (spiritual coterie) of Lord Shiva performed the pradakshina (spiritual circumambulation) around without including Goddess Gowri (Parvati). Lord Shiva told Parvati (Gauri) that she has no significance for them; hence she was excluded from Pradakshina.

Goddess Parvati became furious and left the place with reddish eyes to the forest. Goddess Gowri (Goddess Parvati) wanted to state her importance. She asked the sage Gautama a better path to obtain Lord Shivas half body. He told her to observe Kedareshwar Vrata. She performed Kedara Puja to obtain half body of Lord Shiva. Since then Shiva is also known as ‘Ardha Nareeshwara.
