Kurma Jayanthi or first appearance day of Lord Kurma, the tortoise form of Lord Vishnu is usually observed on Vaishakh Purnima in many places of India. But in some regions, it is celebrated on Nirjala Ekadashi. In 2018, Kurma Jayanthi (Nirjala Ekadashi) date is June 23.
Lord Vishnu was incarnated as Kurma avatar in order to help Gods and demons with becoming the base to Mount Mandara in Samudra Manthan (churning of the Ocean).
Srikurmam Sri Kurmanatha Swamy Temple near Srikakulam of Andhra Pradesh is the only temple dedicated to Kurmaavataram. Matsya Kurma Sametha Lakshmi Narayanaswamy Temple, Madhapur, Hyderabad, is another temple dedicated to Lord Kurma.
