Kovilpatti Muthuveeran Swamy Temple

Kovilpatti Muthuveeran Swamy Temple.. There is a wonderful temple situated for our guardian deity, Sri Muthuveeran Swamy, at Thonukaal Village, Kovilpatti, Thootukudi District, and apart from this temple, few more temples are dedicated for him in the nearby villages.

Once there lived a pious couple, Subbaiyan and Arumugathal in Thonukal Village, who were staunch devotees of Lord Muruga, and after visiting Lord Senthil Andavar of Thiruchendur, Ma Arumugathal gave birth to a beautiful male child, and they have named him as Muthu, one of the excellent names of Lord Muruga. The child began to grow up in a nice manner, he contains good physique and a charming face, and hence he has joined as a security guard under a rich Landlord at Kadambur. Since Muthu has served his master sincerely, bravely and honestly, his master has given him the title, “MUTHU VEERAN”.

Once while he was guarding the Kadambur village, he heard a voice which sought for his help. When he went to that place, he saw a beautiful girl, whose name was Gomati, who was supposed to be the daughter of the Landlord’s accountant. She has sought for his help since her necklace was fell down in a pond. Being a brave person, Muthuveeran searched for the necklace, found it after some time, and gave it to Gomati. After seeing the brave person, Sri Muthuveeran, Gomati fell in love with him, and as per her wish, Muthuveeran take her to the next village, in order to get married with her.

But, however, the brothers of Gomati, searched for them and finally they met both of them, killed them by tearing them into pieces. After their death, both of them were became spirits, and especially the spirit of Sri Muthuveeran has become very angry with those who have killed him, and hence he killed the entire five brothers of Gomati, and even after that, the spirit of Sri Muthuveeran didn’t attain peaceful state. Due to that, Thonukaal village people has constructed a nice temple for him, and also constructed a separate temple for Ma Gomati, and named those temples as Sri Muthuveeran Temple, and as Ma Gomatiamman Temple, respectively. But females are only allowed to enter into Ma Gomatiamman Temple. They also decorated the deities of Muthuveeran and Gomatiamman with ornaments, beautiful garments, and with fragrant flowers, offered the best holy Prasad items which was liked by them, and pacified the souls of Lord Muthuveeran and Goddess Gomati Amman. Still now, Muthuveeran and his consort Ma Gomati Amman used to hear the problems of their devotees, and used to tackle those problems in a wonderful manner.

In general, most of the village deities are considered to be the ancestral of the village people, and most of the village deities have become spirits due to their tragic and pathetic death. Once if we worship those deities by honouring them properly, they would attain peacefulness, and would become honourable village gods and goddesses.

Hence let us worship Lord Muthu Veeran, and Ma Gomati Amman, who are the great guardian deities of Thootukudi, and let’s be blessed.
