Kallada Boat Race: Onam Kallada Jalotsavam

Onam Kallada Jalotsavam or Kallada Boat Race was founded in 1969. It is held in Kollam district in Kerala, India.  Normally 12 teams participate in this event. The official television broadcaster is DD Malayalam. This popular boat race event is held at Munroe Thuruthu in Kallada River on 28 days after Onam. During the event, Famous achievers and winner in various fields are honored.

From Munroethuruthu or Munroe Island, the Kallada boat race can be conveniently viewed. In the tourist map of Kerala, Munroe Island holds an important place. Kollam district tourist promotion council conducts sightseeing through country boat in this region. Munroe Island can be reached from Kollam is 71 km away by road from the Trivandrun airport,  12 km from Kundara $ 24 km from karunagapally at north and Kollam railway station by road (28 km).

The grand competitions will be preceded by mass drill by the boats competing in the race and a colourful sail-past. This boat race happens on 28 days after Onam. Nearly 5 Iruttukuthi A grade boats and 12 snake boats participates in this event.  As first to fourth places, rupees one lakh, rupees fifty thousand, rupees twenty five thousand and rupees fifteen thousand is given respectively and rupees fifty thousand will be given to each team as bonus.

The main participants of this boat race are Karichal Chundan, Jesus Boat Club, Payippad Chudan, Kannetti Sangam Boat Club, Sree Ganesh Chundan, St Francis Boat Club etc. This event brings a lot of foreigners and domestic tourist to this spot during the festive season.
