Kalashtami, 2 May 2013 (Monthly Kala Ashtami)

2 May 2013 is observed as Kalashtami. Also known as Kala Ashtami, Kalashtami falls on Ashtami tithi of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of every Hindu month. Kalashtami is an auspicious day for the devotees of Lord Kalabhairava who observe fasting on this day.

Kalashtami of 2 May 2013 falls in Chaitra Month as per Amavasyant calendars and in Vaishakh Month as per Purnimant (North Indian Hindi) calendars. It falls in Chithirai Masam of Tamil calendar, Meda Masam in Malayalam calendar and Baisakh Month in Bengali Panjika.

Kalashtami Vrat is mostly observed in Maharashtra, Deccan Karnataka, Marathi influenced areas of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and some parts of North India.

Generally, Kalashtami is observed on the day when Ashtami prevails in the night.

Kalabhairava Jayanti (Kala Bhairav Ashtami / Mahakaal Jayanti) is the most meritorious day to observe fasting for Lord Kalabhairava. It falls in Margashirsha Month as per North Indian Hindi calendars. It coincides with Kartik Month as per Marathi, Kannada, Telugu and Gujarati calendars of Amavasyant Panchang.
