Gopadma Vrata, Go Padma Vratam, is a four month long Vrata observed during the Chaturmas puja (four holy months in Hinduism), starting from Devsayani Ekadashi or Vishnu Shayana Ekadashi. In 2026, Gopadma Vratam date is July 25 (It begins on July 25).

It is a festival of farmers and the people associated with dairy industry who consider Govu (cow) as their source of living.

The major rituals of Go Padma Vrata, the vrat especially dedicated to Lord Vishnu, include Vishnu Puja and Go pooja. Lord Sri Krishna is also worshipped in some places.

• Worship of All Deities: In Hindu tradition, it is believed that 33 crore deities reside within a cow. Worshipping the cow during this Vrata is equivalent to invoking the blessings of the entire cosmic pantheon.

• Removal of Sins: Devotees perform this fast to wash away accumulated negative karma or sins and to bring peace, harmony, and material prosperity to their household.

• Five-Year Commitment: Traditionally, the full cycle of the Vrata is performed for a duration of five consecutive years to achieve its complete spiritual merits.

Rituals & Puja Vidhi

1. Sacred Rangoli (Gopadma): Devotees wake up early, take a bath, and draw a distinct rangoli in their puja space or clean courtyard representing a cow, its calf, and padma (lotus) motifs. Typically, lotus designs or circular steps are drawn to represent circumambulations.

2. Lord Vishnu Puja: Sincere prayers and Vishnu Sahasranama (or his various sacred names) are chanted throughout the day. Offerings of dhoop, deep, fresh flowers, and yellow fruits or sweets are made to the deity.

3. Cow Worship: Devotees physically or symbolically apply a tilak to the forehead of a cow and its calf, touch their feet in reverence, and feed them fresh grass or the first prepared roti of the day.

4. Circumambulations (Pradakshina): It is custom to complete sacred circumambulations (often 33 rounds matching the symbolic deities) around the drawing or the cow.

5. Charity (Daan): To formally complete the rituals on auspicious milestones like Purnima, clothes, food grain, or useful materials are donated to Brahmins or the underprivileged.
