The Vishnu Purana is one of the eighteen Mahapuranas, and it is considered as a holy text of Hinduism. It contains the details of Lord Vishnu, his avatars and about his famous devotees like Narada, Prahalada, Thumburu and Dhruva.

According to Vishnu Purana, Lord Vishnu is considered as the main god and all the other gods and goddesses are considered as demi gods and demi goddesses, and they obeys his orders and acts as per his instructions, and through his supreme powers he is controlling the entire universe.

This famous Vishnu Purana was written by Sri Vedavyasa, who is also an aspect of Lord Vishnu. This purana mentions about Lord Brahma and Shiva, and also about other Devas like Varuna, Indra and Kubera. In Vishnu Purana, Rishi Maitreya and his guru, Parashara, tells us about the significance of Lord Vishnu, and about his Yoga Nidhra, a type of meditation.

In this Purana, Lord Vishnu is called as Hari, Janardana, Madhava, Achyuta, Madhusudhana, Jaganatha, Padmanabha, Dhamodara, Hrishikesha and by various other names. By chanting his slokas and by reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama, we would get mental peacefulness, we would be freed from our sins and diseases and we would get divine enlightenment.

Vishnu Purana is the most important and oldest among the 18 major Puranas. Among all the Puranas, Vishnu Purana is considered as most significant. According to Vishnu Purana the chief deity is Lord Vishnu, who creates, protects and destroys the universe. The Vishnu Purana describes about the seas, stars, planets, the sun, moon, the mountains, and about the various deities.The Puranas have been composed mainly in Sanskrit, but some Puranas have also been composed in regional languages.

There are totally 7,000 Slokas are available in Vishnu Purana. Vishnu Purana is a Vaishnav Mahapuran, and by reading this holy text, would destroy our sins. This scripture was praised even by ancient kings, scholars and by the devotees of Lord Vishnu. The number of slokas contains in Vishnu Purana is only 7,000.

Vishnu Purana is a Hindu scripture which mentions about various attributes of Lord Vishnu. Apart from Lord Vishnu, the importance of Ma Lakshmi is also mentioned. It also describes the greatness of ancient kings like Vaivasvata Manu, Ikshvaku, Kashyapa, Purvansh, Kuruvansh, Yaduvansh, etc.

This purana contains the details about the emergence of demigods, the story of Samudra Manthan, the description of the creator god Brahma.

This purana also describes about heaven, hell & the underworld, and about the entire 14 worlds in detail.

The incarnation of Ved Vyasa and the information regarding Lord Krishna’s incarnation were also mentioned in this Holy Purana, and also about the life of Lord Krishna, the various miracles performed by him at his childhood like killing of demons like Kamsa, Butana were also mentioned in this sacred Purana.

Vishnu Purana tells us about so many details related to life. By reading Vishnu Purana regularly, we could lead a happy and a peaceful life.

Vishnu Purana also teaches the following things:-

Guests must be treated like god, and they must be well-respected by feeding sufficient food items to them. Always marry a pious and a chaste woman. Woman must always speak softly, gently and sweetly.

One should not marry a girl of the same gotra. Doing so would create lot of problems in the couple’s life.

Sleep only for limited hours in a day. Don’t be lazy.

Always act kindly with others, and be a selfless person.

Vishnu Purana mentions donating food to others even if we suffer from dire poverty.

Don’t cheat others.

One should take bath daily for a healthy life.

Try to get up before sunrise and finish your food before sunset.

Sick people must compulsorily read the holy texts, in order to get rid from their diseases.

The 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu are Matsya avatar, Kurma avatar, Varaha avatar, Narasimha avatar, Vamana avatar, Parashuram avatar, Rama avatar, Krishna avatar, Buddha avatar and Kalki avatar.
