Drona Navami, Dronacharya Navami, is an auspicious day dedicated to Dronacharya, the royal guru of Kauravas and Pandavas in Mahabharata. In 2013, Drona Navami date is February 19.
Drona Navami is observed on Shukla Paksha Navami in Magha Month.
Drona was the master of advanced military arts, including the Devastras. He taught Viluvidya (archery) and many other military arts to both Kauravas and Pandavas, but his favorite among all was Arjuna.
Drona was considered to be a partial incarnation of Brihaspati, the Deva Guru.
Dronacharya was born in Dehradun in a Bharadvaja Brahmin family around 9000 BC. He has got the name ‘Drona’ as he was not gestated in a womb, but outside the human body in a drona (vessel or a basket).
