Divine Thiruppavai

Andal Devi (Godadevi)

Andal Devi (Godadevi)

The Thiruppavai is a set of Tamil Divine hymns dedicated to the female poet-saint Andal, who is believed to be an incarnation of Ma Bhudevi, the Holy earth goddess. She was brought up by the great Alwar Saint Sri Periyalvar. She has observed fasting which is also known as Pavai Nonbu,in order to merge with Lord Vishnu.

This great work Thiruppavai was composed by Ma Andal, in praise of Lord Vishnu, and those who sung this song, would get the blessings of both the earth goddess, Ma Bhudevi as well as our beloved god Vishnu. This great work Thiruppavai was translated in south Indian languages also, due to its significance.

The verses from the Holy Thiruppavai can be sung either in our homes or in the Vishnu Temples. And due to the recitation of Thiruppavai, the Tamil Margazhi month, attains great significance.

Some of the verses from the delicious poem Thiruppavai are as follows:-

On this wonderful month of Marghazhi,
On this full moon day,
Oh ladies please come up for bathing,
Oh ladies please dress up yourselves with good costumes,
And Oh ladies who belongs to the community of cowherds, come soon, to have a glimpse of our Lord Krishna,
he is the one, who kills his enemies without mercy,
He is the one, who is the son of Nanda gopa,
He is the lovely son of Ma Yasodha,
Who used to wearfragmented flower garlands,
who appears in blue colour,
who contains lotus eyes,
whose face shines like that of the full moon, who appears like the beautiful Kamadeva,
And he, is none other than our Dear Lord Narayana,
who would always give protection to us,
and let us sing precious songs on him.
Oh, my dear Krishna Devotees,
please hear the songs of Lord Krishna, let us sing it on to his ears,
he is the wonderful mischievous boy who sleeps in the ocean of milk,
who would prefer to taste cow’sbutter,
who would never show anger towards his devotees,
who would turn our sorrows into happiness, who is the master of the universe.
If we sing songs in praise of the great Lord Vishnu, Who has measured the entire universe through his small foot,
if we worship our Goddess Pavai,
then rain would shower in all seasons,
and crops also would grow properly,
Hence let us observe the Pavaivrathamduring this Margazhi month.
Please grant our wishes,
Oh rain God,, the great Varuna who comes from the sea,
who is the great devotee of our sweet God Padmanabha. In order to make this entire world to be filled with happiness,
let us take bath on this month of Margazhi, and let us sincerely worship our beloved Lord Krishna!
Our Lord Krishna who was bornin Mathura, who has performed divine plays and made others to get happiness, who takes bath on the Holy
River Ma Yamuna,
who belongs to the family of cow herds,
who is also called as Damodhara, who would destroy our sorrows into ashes.
Oh, girls, please wake up,
Let us hear the holy chants of “Govinda, Gopala”.
Lord Krishna dwells on the souls of the servantsand he dwells on the souls of theRoyal Kings,
who is the one who sleeps on the great serpent Bed AdiSesha.
Did you not hear, the temple bills are fast ranging, and I can easily hear the chirping of the birds,
Which sounds like a wonderful discussion made between them,
Oh, my marvellous girls, How can you be able to sleep,
When the temple priests sing the names of Lord Krishna so sweetly.
Oh, my girls please open the door,Thesun shines beautifully on the skies, it is the early morning time, we can hear the voice of the cows, MA, MA, and they are ready to graze on the grass fields.
Oh girlswho are filled with happiness, Please wake up soon,
and chant the glorious names of Lord Narayana.

Oh my Dear Girls, why you still sleeps on this early morning, without thinking about our beloved Lord Krishna, are your become dumb or deaf, why are you so lazy, please get up soon, get neatly dressed, wear good clothes and valuable ornaments, in order to have the divine vision of our precious god “GOPALA”.
