Chitrakoot | Holy Place in ‘Ramayana Route Map’

Chitrakoot is a popular pilgrimage centre and it is located in Madhya Pradesh. It is a religious place and it is well known for its famous temples which are mentioned in the Hindu scriptures.

During festivals like Amavasya, Deepavali, Poornima, and Rama Navami, large number of devotees would gather at this place for visiting the temples. Ayurveda, Yoga and meditation centres are also situated in Chitrakoot. This place was appeared in the form of dense forests,during the Treta Yuga. And at this place, Lord Rama, Mata Sita and Lakshmana have spent most of their exile period. Rishis like Atri, Anusuya, Dattatreya, Markandeya and Valmiki had meditated at this place, and as a result, they have got spiritual enlightenment.

In Ramayana and Mahabharata, this place was popularly mentioned.Famous poets Kalidas and Tulsidas had mentioned about the holiness of this place in their works, and Tulsidas had stayed at this place for a few months and meditated Lord Rama, and as a result he had the darshan of Lord Hanuman. The holy River Ma Mandakini flows at this place, and it is believed, that during the exile period of Rama, he took bath in this sacred river along with Sita and Lakshmana.

The Ashram of Atri and Anusuya is also located a few kilometres away from this place. Lord Rama along with Sita had visited the Ashram and met Rishi Atri and Anusuya. Gupt-Godavari is situated a few kilometres from Chitrkoot. Bharath Koop is the sacred place where Rama’s brother Bharata had stored sacred water from the holy rivers of India. Ram Shaiya is place where Rama, Sita and Laxmana used to sleep in the nights during their exile period.
