Traditional rituals to perform on Chandra Darshan
Here are the traditional Chandra Darshan rituals, organized step by step, with mantras, offerings, and observance tips for a complete home puja and vrat practice.
Before moonrise
Take a morning bath, don clean light or white clothing, and resolve to observe the vrat until the first sighting of the crescent after sunset, keeping fruit-only or nirjala per personal capacity and tradition.
Prepare a simple altar with a white cloth, ghee lamp, white flowers, uncooked rice, sandal paste, kheer or white sweets, milk, curd, and sugar; keep a small lota of water with raw milk mixed for arghya.
At moon sighting
Go to an open west-facing spot soon after sunset; sight the slender crescent and then begin puja while the moon is low on the western horizon for the short visibility window typical on Chandra Darshan evenings.
Light a ghee diya and camphor; offer white flowers, akshata, white sandal paste, fragrance, and naivedya (preferably kheer or white sweets) to Chandra Deva with folded hands.
Arghya and aarti
Offer arghya by pouring water mixed with milk toward the moon from a small lota or plate, with a steady stream, then perform a small aarti to the moon with the lit lamp in clockwise circles while reciting mantras.
After arghya and aarti, gently sprinkle a few drops on the head and touch the eyes as a sign of receiving soma-blessing, then place the lota back on the altar for the closing prayers.
Mantras to chant
Core graha mantra: “Om Som Somaya Namah” for 108 repetitions, or per capacity; traditional upasana often uses this bija for Chandra shanti and emotional steadiness.
Vedic-style dhyana mantra option: “Om Kshiraputray Vidmahe Amrita Tatvaya Dhimahi Tanno Chandrah Prachodayat,” repeating during or after arghya and aarti as a formal prayer to Chandra.
Breaking the fast
Conclude the fast after the darshan and puja by partaking of the naivedya, typically a small portion of kheer or a white sweet, and then simple satvik food as per family tradition that evening.
Share prasad with family; many observe giving a small portion to a married woman as mangalya-ashirvada, aligning with auspicious household customs tied to Chandra worship.
Charity and remedies
Donate white items such as milk, rice, sugar, white clothing, or silver coins to Brahmins or the needy after the puja for prosperity, mental peace, and Chandra shanti phala per smriti and popular observance guides.
For astrological remediation, prioritize white offerings, silver, and milk arghya; those undergoing Moon afflictions or dasha periods often add Chandra shanti japa or a brief homa on this evening when feasible.
Additional observance tips
Begin with a brief Ganesha and Shiva smarana before Chandra puja to remove obstacles and steady the mind, then proceed to the terrace/balcony for darshan and offerings facing west-northwest as visibility permits.
If clouds obstruct visibility, many traditions still perform arghya and puja within the published viewing window, keeping the vrat niyama, and complete parana after attempting darshan sincerely per local parampara.
Optional expansions
Include a short Navagraha prayer and Chandra Kavacha or contemplate a single mala of “Om Shitanshu Vibhanshu Amritanshu Namah” as given in traditional puja notes for calming the mind and cultivating somya-guna.
For milestone observances like Sahasra Chandra Darshan (1000th moon), temples may conduct sankalpa, kalasha sthapana, Chandra japa, and homa with poornahuti; households can adopt a simplified sankalpa and japa sequence as appropriate.
