Bhavani Jayanti, also known as Bhavani Ashtami, is an auspicious day dedicated to Goddess Bhavani. It is observed on Chaitra Shukla Astami, eighth day in bright half of Chaitra Month. In 2026, Bhavani Jayanti date is March 26.
Bhavani Ashtami is also celebrated as Chaitra Navratri Durgashtami, and Ashokashtami in other parts of India.
Bhavani Ashtami is one of the major festivals in Tuljapur Bhavani Temple in Maharashtra, and some other mandirs dedicated to Goddess Durga Bhavani.
Key Rituals
Devotees fast, perform Panchamrit Abhishek (bathing the idol with five nectars), chant mantras, offer fruits, flowers, and sweets, and conduct fire rituals. Special pujas occur at temples like Tulja Bhavani in Maharashtra and Khir Bhawani in Jammu & Kashmir.
Significance
Worship seeks victory over obstacles, spiritual purification, and cosmic balance between creation and destruction. It’s especially revered in Maharashtra as a kuladevata (family deity) for many.
