Ayyavu Swamikal (1814-1909) was a great Shiva devotee and a human activist who fought against caste discrimination. His birth name was Subharayan. Ayyavu Swamikal was born in 1814 in Nakalapuram in Tamil Nadu. His ancestors were scholars and experts in Yoga and Meditation, similar to that, he also developed the habit of doing yoga and meditation from his younger age itself.
At his younger age, he got spiritual knowledge from the great Saints, Sachidananda Maharaj and Sri Chitti Paradeshi and from then onwards, he started to meditate on Lord Shiva, and began going to nearby temples to worship the Lord. After some time, he went to Palani and done severe meditation on Lord Muruga, and also visited the Murugan temple and offered his worship. Then he travelled to foreign countries, and cultivated the bhakti spirit among the people by giving religious discourses.
He also met many great saints during his period, and interacted with them about devotional matters, and shared his knowledge with them. He was a great scholar and was talented in the field of astrology, siddha and Ayurveda, and treated the ailments of the poor people at free of cost.
At his teenage, he used to meditate for a long period of time, even without having proper food, sleep and water. He has written divine texts. He visited several temples throughout India, and once, he got the darshan of Parvati Mata at Trivandrum, Kerala, and after that, he got great spiritual energy and power, and through his powers, he has helped a lot to the people. He was praised by the kings and by the common man for his great powers and talents in various fields.
Due to the instructions given by Mata Parvati, he has constructed the Thycaud Devi Temple, Trivandrum, Keralaand stayed there for some time.
Ayyavu Swami attained Samadhi in the year 1909. A Shivalinga was installed over the place of Samadhi of Ayyavu Swami in Thycaud in 1943. This is now known as Thycaud Siva Temple.
