Avighna Vrata or Avigna Vratam is observed for two days: Chavithi and Panchami in Shukla Paksha or bright half of Falgun month (February – March). In 2021, Avighna Vrata date is March 17.
As the name indicates, this vow is observed to get rid of obstacles and hurdles in ones life. To perform the vrata, devotees should observe upvaas on Chavithi or Chaturthi.
The main puja is performed on Shukla Paksha Panchami, the following day of Chaturthi upvaas.
Tila daanam or donating sesame seeds to the Brahmin is the major ritual of Avigna Vratam. Sankata Hara Ganesh Stotram (Sankat Mochan Ganesh Stotram), and Ganapati Ashtakam are the important stotras to chant during Avighna Vrata.
In some places, Avigna Vratam is continued for four months – Falguna, Chaitra, Vaishakha and Jyeshta months and in the fifth month i.e. in Ashada month, Vrata Udyapana is performed. During the vratam, rice cooked with sesame seeds is offered as naivedya to Lord Ganesha.
Ganesh Mantras to chant during Avighna Vratam:
Om Shooraya namaha
Om Dhiraya namaha
Om gajananaya namaha
Om lambodaraya namaha
Om ekadanshtraya namaha
Om Vakrathundaya namaha
