According to the Hindu Religious History, the eight Bhairava are… Sri Asithaanga Bhairava, Sri Ruru Bhairava, Sri Chanda Bhairava, Sri Krodha Bhairava, Sri Unmatha Bhairava, Sri Kapaala Bhairava, Sri Bheeshana Bhairava and Sri Samhaara Bhairava.

Among these eight Lords, four belong to the main direction of South, North, East and West. These four directions have religious and social importance among devotees and pilgrims. Each of these Lord have temple that are largely dedicated to them with special pujas and rituals performed for the Lord.

Sri Asithaanga Bhairava appears with His consort Bhrami and Vahana- Swan (nnam) and in the direction towards the East. The temples that are dedicated to this lord are at Brahma Sira Kandeeswarar Temple in Thirukandiyur and Sattanathar Temple in Sirkazhi.  Nakshatram/ Birth Star related are Punarpoosam, Visakam and Purattadhi. The stone related is Puspharagham (Yellow Sapphire).

Sri Chanda Bhairavar appears with His consort Koumaari and Vahana –Peacock and in the direction towards South. The temples that are dedicated to this lord are at Vaitheeswaran Koil. Nakshatram/ Birth Star related are Mirugasiridam, Chithirai and Avittam. The stone related is Pavazham (Coral).

Sri Unmatha Bhairavar appears with His consort Vaarahi and Vahana- Horse and in the direction towards West.  The temple that is dedicated to this lord is at Thiruveezhimizhalai.

Sri Bheeshana Bhairavar appears with His consort Chamundi and Vahana- Lion and in the direction towards North. The temple that is dedicated to this lord is at Rameswaram, Piranmalai. Nakshatram/ Birth Star related to Thiruvadhirai, Swathi, Sadayam, Aswini, Magam and Mulam.
