Amavasya is the fifteenth day whereas in other calendars followed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Amavasya is the last day for a month.

Amavasya Tharpan or Amavasi Tarpan is the major ritual followed on Amavasya. Hindus offer Pinda and Shraddh karma to dead ancestors. It is also called Amavasya Pitru Tharpanam.
