There are 13 Amavasya in 2019 – one in each month as per Gregorian calendar and a couple of Amavasyas in August. Amavasya has great significance in Hindu rituals and Hindu calendar.
Ashada Amavasya is referred to as Chukkala Amavasya; Shravana Amavasya is celebrated as Polala Amavasya (Bail Pola), Bhadrapada / Ashwin Amavasya is observed as Mahalaya Amavasya (Sarva Pitru Amavasya).
Somvati Amavasya (Amavasya on Monday), Shani Amavasya (Amavasya on Saturday), Bhaumvati Amavasya (Amavasya on Tuesday) and Bhanu Amavasya (Amavasya on Sunday) are the meritorious Amavasya Vrat. In 2019, Somvati Amavasya falls thrice, Shanaischari Amavasya thrice, Bhaumvati Amavasya twice and there is no Bhanu Amavasya in this English calendar year.
On Amavasya, devotees also offer Pitru Tharpan, Pinda Daan and other Pitru rituals.
Amavasya is considered as inauspicious day to perform any auspicious program in all Hindu calendars but in Tamil calendar Amavasai is the best day to perform such activities. As per North Indian calendars followed in Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Rajasthan, etc.. Amavasya is the fifteenth day whereas in other calendars followed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Amavasya is the last day for a month.
Amavasya Tharpan or Amavasi Tarpan is the major ritual followed on Amavasya. Hindus offer Pinda and Shraddh karma to dead ancestors. It is also called Amavasya Pitru Tharpanam.
