The Tamil month Aadi is considered to be a most auspicious one for Amman worship. During the Aadi month, we can see that in most of the Amman Temples, Koozh offering would be done by the devotees, as well as by the temples authorities. We can also hear lot of Amman songs which would be sung in the Players kept in the Amman Temples, and especially devotees would eagerly listen to the Amman songs sung by L.R.Eswari Madam, since she had sung Amman songs melodiously, and in a high pitch sound, which would increase the bhakti of the devotees.
Amman is another name of Ma Shakti Devi, and since she is serving us like an affectionate mother, also known as Amma in Tamil, and slightly the term Amma was modified, and came to be known as Amman. It is also a traditional practice, that during the Tamil month Aadi, auspicious events like Grihapravesham, marriage and other functions would not be celebrated, and also establishment of new business and purchase of plots/homes would not be done during this month, since it is believed that during this Aadi month, Ma Shakti Devi performs penance on Lord Shiva, in order to bring prosperity to the entire universe.
There is a popular Tamil quote, “AADI MASAMA ADA PODI”, which means, avoidance of doing certain things during Aadi month. The famous Tamil Siddhars like Agastiyar, Thirumoolar and Bogar would also be doing severe penance on Ma Shakti Devi in the Holy Himalayas Mountains during the month of Aadi, for the well-being of the entire living beings in the earth. The newly wedded couples are not allowed to unite with each other during the month of Aadi, since everyone is supposed to concentrate their attention only on worshipping Ma Shakti in order to increase more and more bhakti on her.
Our human life consists of full of dangers and difficulties. In order to lead a highly prosperous and a peaceful life, we have to decrease our worldly pleasures, and we must have to increase more and more spiritual pleasures. Time lost cannot be restored again, hence before our death we have to gain lot of good karmas, by continuously worshipping Ma Shakti Devi, not only during the Aadi month, but on all other months also.
