Kamadhenu Puja Go Puja on Kanuma

16 January 2016 is Kanuma & Mattu Pongal. Mattu Pongal is the third day of Pongal celebrations in Tamil Nadu and Kanuma is the third festival of Makara Sankranthi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

It commemorates the victory of Lord Krishna over Indra. Indra tried to destroy the Gokulam without knowing that Krishna is one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Parvatha (Mount Govardhan) to rescue the people and the cattle of the place. Then, Indra came to Krishna and begged his pardons for his mistake. Since then Krishna Puja, Govardhan Puja and Go Puja have become rituals of Kanuma or Mattu Pongal day.

Kanuma or Mattu Pongal was mentioned as ‘Vrushabhotsavam’ or ‘Anadotsavam’ in the Vedas.

Kanuma is also known as Pasuvula Panduga (festival of cattle) in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Cows, buffalos and other cattle are decorated and worshipped on this day.
