13 August 2011, Raksha Bandhan, Rakhi Festival

Today, 13 August 2011 is observed as Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi Festival). It is celebrated on Shravan Purnima, Full Moon day in Shravan Month in all lunar calendars. It marks the divine love and affection between brother and sister. On this day, sister ties Rakhi (Raksha) to her brother’s hand and prays for his happiness, health & prosperity. Brother gives the assurance of protecting her from all sorts of obstacles & problems in life.

Raksha Bandhan is mentioned in many Puranas and ancient Hindu Scriptures. Many legends are associated with Rakhi Festival. The stories of King Puru & Alexander, Bali & Goddess Lakshmi, Draupadi & Sri Krishna in Mahabharat are important ones among them.
