Shravani Mela 2012, Shravani Mela in Deoghar Baidyanath Temple

Shravani Mela is the 30-day festival in Deoghar Baidyanath Temple of Jharkhand. Shravani Mela 2012 begins on July 4 and ends on August 2 in 2012. It is celebrated throughout Sawan mahina or Shravan month (July-August).  At Sultangunj, a small village in Bihar, Shravani Mela starts.

Devotees take holy water of Ganga at Sultangunj and showers on Baba Baidyanath Shiva in Deoghar. More than a 10 million devotees form a queue of saffron dyed clothes (108 kilometers) from Sultangunj to Deoghar Baidyanath Temple.

Shravani Mela begins on Shravan Amavasya, No Moon day in Shravan month, and ends on Shravan Purnima, Full Moon day in Shravan maas.

Sultangunj has the special significance in Shravani Mela. Here, Ganga flows northwards before turning east again. Legend says that Shivling of Deoghar Baidyanath temple was brought there by demon Kind Ravana hence the temple is also known as Ravaneshwar Mahadeo temple.
