Akshaya Tritiya or Akshaya Trithiya is one of the most auspicious days for Hindus. In 2012, Akshaya Tritiya date is April 24. It is celebrated on the third day of the bright half of Vaishakha Maas (Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya or Thadiya). Akshaya Tritiya 2012 is even more auspicious as it falls on Rohini Nakshatra (Rohini star) day.
As per the Hindu traditions and culture, this festival is considered as the most significant day to perform sacred deeds (Punya Karya).
In Sanskrit, the meaning of Akshaya is never diminishing. As the meaning says, on the day of Akshaya Tritiya people never feel the dearth of happiness or bliss.

Akshay Tritiya 2010 date is May 16th. I can say its tentative. It may change as per Adhik Maas or some other aspects of Panchang.

My mother ceremony usually falls before one day of akshyathridhi , thidhi is DWITIYA ,patkshya SUKLA PAKSHA , in this year we are getting two one is on April 16 , the other is on May 15. As you are saying that your mother’s ceremony falls before a day of Akshaya Thadiya then you can follow this. You can perform the thidhi on the day before Akshaya Thadiya… i.e. May 15.

Akshaya Thtitiya 2010 16th April falls during kshaya paksha with 13 days in that paksha, is considered in-auspicious for Shubha Karyas according to our panchangam. Can we perform grihapravesh on that day?

Akshay Tritiya 2010 date is May 16 and not April 16. April 16 is Adhika Vaishaka Tritiya which is considered not auspicious. Shubhakaryas are avoided in Adhika masam. Adhika masam is Shunya masam as per Hindu Panchangam. So we can do any shubhakarya on Akdhay Tritiya (May 16, 2010).

May 16 falls during Kshaya paksha as you mentioned. The day is not auspicious for Gruhapravesham. It is a good day for marriage but not for Gruhapravesh as per Hinduism. Gruhapravesham is usually performed early in the morning. There is Durmuhurtham and varjam during brahma muhurtam and till 7’0 clock in the morning. Hence it is not auspicious for gruha pravesham. Akshya Tritiya is on 5/5/11 in USA, it is when the Sun and Moon are both exalted. In USA it actually starts on the evening on 5/4 and last into the morning ( 9 am) on 5/6.
