Yama Trayodashi | Shamana Trayodasi

Yama Trayodashi or Shamana Trayodasi is the first day of 5-day Diwali festival celebrations. In 2025, Yama Trayodashi date is October 18.

Mainly the festival of Diwali begins (Yama Trayodasi) and ends (Yama Dwitiya) with the worship of Lord Yamadharmaraja, the King of Naraka loka. Yama Deepadan is the main ritual of the day.

Lighting of Yama Deepam (diya) is performed on Yama Trayodasi. In some places, there is a ritual of lighting the diya on Dhanteras day and keep this alive till Diwali Lakshmi Puja.

Yama Trayodasi is also known as Shamana Trayodasi. ‘Shamana’ means the aspect which makes your get rid of sins and makes you perfect to get moksha. Observing Yama Trayodasi puja makes you free from fear of death and gives you the mental pleasure.

Yama Trayodasi is also observed as Dhana Trayodasi (Dhanteras) and Dhanvantari Jayanti.

Significance of Yama Trayodashi

  • Worship of Yama: On this day, devotees perform rituals to honor Yama, the deity of death, to seek protection from untimely death. This is done by lighting lamps (Deepak) outside the home, specifically facing south, which is considered Yama’s domain
  • Rituals: The ritual known as Yamadipadana involves placing oil lamps outside the house during the evening. It is believed that this act pleases Yama and ensures the safety and longevity of family members. The lighting of these lamps symbolizes a prayer for protection against negative energies associated with death.
  • Cultural Practices: The day is also associated with other rituals such as offering prayers to deities like Lakshmi and Kubera, emphasizing prosperity and wealth. This combination of worship highlights the dual focus on both life and afterlife

Rituals and Observances

  1. Lighting Lamps:
    • Timing: Lamps should be lit in the evening during Sandhya time.
    • Placement: They are placed outside the home facing south.
  2. Prayers and Offerings:
    • Offerings may include flowers, rice (Akshat), and other items to honor Yama.
    • Devotees recite specific prayers asking for longevity and protection from misfortunes.
  3. Community Celebrations:
    • In many regions, this day is celebrated with communal gatherings where stories about Yama and rituals are shared.
