Vijaya Ekadashi is observed on Falguna Krishna Ekadasi, the eleventh day during Falguna month as per North Indian calendars. It corresponds to Magha Krishna Ekadasi in other calendars. Vijaya Ekadashi 2011 date is February 28th. According to Skanda Purana, the devotees who observe Vijaya Ekadasi vrata would become free from the result of all their sins and get away from their sorrows.
Vijaya Ekadasi legend or story was narrated to Sage Narada by his father Lord Brahma. As per the vrat katha of Vijaya Ekadashi, when Lord Sri Ram wanted to cross the sea during Ramayana war, he was failed to do so. Lakshmana told Rama to consult a Rishi who can able to give a solution for it. A Muni advised Rama to perform Vijaya Eakdasi vrata to get rid of all his obstacles. Rama did so and crossed the Sea with his army (vanara sena) to demolish Ravana.
