December 18, 2013, Today is Thiruvathira Festival, an important cultural celebration in Kerala. Also known as Arudra Darisanam, this festival falls on Thiruvathira Nakshatram day in Dhanu Month of Malayalam calendar.
Married women pray to Lord Shiva for health and longevity of their husbands. Unmarried girls offer special prayers to get good husbands.
‘Thiruvathira Pattu’ (a song sung during Thiruvathirai), ‘Thiruvathirakkali’ or ‘Kaikottikali’ (a dance form performed during Thiruvathira) and ‘Pathirapoochoodal’ are the several aspects of cultural extravaganza of Thiruvathira festival in Kerala.
The first Thiruvathira festival after marriage for a couple (mainly woman) is known as ‘Puthen Thiruvathira’ or ‘Poothiruvathira’. It has great significance in terms of celebrations.
Thiruvathira festival is also associated with ‘Tharakasura Samharam’ by Lord Subramanya (Kartikeya). Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathi, Subramanya Swamy and Kamadeva are worshipped on this festival.
