Sri Swarnapureeswarar temple is located in the village named Andankoil, in the district of Tiruvarur, in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The main deity of this temple is Swarnapureeswarar (Lord Shiva) and his consorts are Swarnambikai and Sivasekari.
The holy tree of this temple is Vanni. The holy water of this temple is Trishoola Gang. The agamam or pooja of this temple is known as Kameeyam. This temple is nearly 1000-2000 years old in this region. The historical name of this place is Thiru Kaduvai Karai Thenputhur.
According to the local legends and scholars, “Saivite Saint Tirunavukkarasar has praised the Lord of the temple in his Thevaram hymns. This is the 97 Lord Shiva Temple on the southern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.”
The main festival of this temple are Maha Shivrathri in February-March; Panguni Uthiram in March-April, Purattasi Navarathri in September-October, Thai Poosam in January-February, Mondays of Karthikai Tamil month covering November-December, Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January, Deepvalli, Pongal, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Vaikasi Thiruvadhirai in May-June, Margazhi Tiruvadirai in December-January, Aipasi Annabishekam in October-November and Maha Shivrathri in February-March are celebrated in the temple.
On Chithirai 11, 12 and 13 in April-May, the rays of Sun fall on Lord in sanctum sanctorum then on these occassions special Surya pujas and rituals are performed in the temple. Lord is Swayambumurthy in this shrine.
The temple is open from 8.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m for pilgrims and devotees. It is the most sought after temple in the district.
