Somvati Amavasya or Ama Somvar vrata, observed on Somvar or Monday which coincides with Amavasya or No Moon day, falls on 2 May 2011. This is the second Somavati Amavasya vrat among three in 2011. The first one was in January and the next one will be in August 2011. Devotees observe fasting on this auspicious day and break their fast after performing Shiva Puja and Chandra Pooja. Amavasya in May 2011 begins on 2 May (Monday) at 10.24 am and ends on 3 May (Tuesday) at 12.20 hrs noon.
People perform Punya Snan on Amavasya and offer pinda daan or Pitru tharpan rituals on this Somvati. A large number of devotees throng to the river banks of Ganga, Yamuna, Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery to perform Punya Snan and Tharpan.
