Shami puja is known as Jammi Puja in Telangana & Andhra Pradesh and Banni Puja in Karnataka. There is a popular legend in Mahabharata that explains the significance of Shami Puja.
The story of Shami Puja dates back to Mahabharata. The story goes like this… Pandavas underwent aranyavaas (exile) for a period of time. Pandavas kept their weapons on Shami tree and went to exile incognito. At the moment when they hid their weapons on the tree they performed puja to the tree to guard the weapons safely.
