Chithirai Vishu, 13 April 2012

Today, 13 April 2012 is Chithirai Vishu, Puthandu, Varusha Pirappu, Tamil New Year day. Mesha Sankranti marks the Solar New Year day (Souramana Ugadi). Vishvath Punyakalam is another name for Chithirai Vishu festival. It marks the Nandana Varusha (2012-2013) in Hindu calendar. Exact time of Mesha Sankramana punyakalam is – 13 April 2012, Friday, at 8.18 PM IST (Indian Standard Time)..

Varusha Pirappu marks the beginning of Chithirai Masam in Tamil calendar.

Souramana Ugadi also marks the beginning of New Year in Punjab. Punjabi New Year day is known as Baisakhi.

The next day of Mesha Sankranti is celebrated as Vishu in Kerala (Malayalam Zodiac New Year), Rongali or Bohag Bihu in Assam (Assamese New Year), Bisu (Tulu New Year) in some parts of Karnataka, Pohela Boishakh or Naba Barsha (Bengali New Year) in West Bengal & Maha Vishuba Sankranti (Odiya New Year) in Odisha.
