Shakambhari Navratri vrata‑paddhati follows the general Navratri structure (kalash‑sthapana, daily Devi‑puja, upavasa, japa) but with special focus on offering vegetables, grains and greens to Goddess Shakambhari as Annapoorneshwari.
Before Navratri begins
-
Choose a clean sthana facing east or north; keep a chauranga/asan, red or green cloth, brass/earthen kalash, barley (jau), and image or murti of Shakambhari or Durga.
-
Decide vrata‑niyama:
-
Phalahar or ek‑bhukt; avoid onion, garlic, meat, alcohol and tamasic conduct.
-
Resolve to do daily japa, minimum one path of Durga Saptashati/selected adhyayas or at least Kavach‑Argala‑Keelak‑Saptashloki.
-
Day 1 – Paush Shukla Ashtami (Kalash‑sthapana)
-
Snan, clean clothes, then clean altar and spread cloth.
-
Fill kalash with clean water, add akshata, a coin, some whole grains; place mango/bilva leaves and coconut; do sankalpa for Shakambhari Navratri from Ashtami to Purnima for anna‑purna, health and kshema of family and lokasangraha.
-
In an earthen pot, sow barley (jau) and sprinkle water; these Navadurga‑jawaras are watered daily during Navratri.
Daily vrata routine (Ashtami to Purnima)
-
Morning:
-
Snan, then deepa‑lighting, Ganesh vandana and kalash‑puja.
-
Offer kumkum, haldi, akshata, flowers, durva (if available), and a red chunri and shringar to the Devi.
-
Naivedya of fruits plus at least one type of vegetable/leafy greens or grains (lauki, palak, methi, mixed sabzi, cereals etc.), symbolising Shakambhari’s “shaka‑anna‑pradana”.
-
-
Japa and path:
-
Minimum 108 japa of “ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं क्लीं भगवति शाकंभरी देव्यै नमः” or “ॐ शाकंभरी देव्यै नमः”.
-
Optional: one sarga/section of Durga Saptashati daily, or select stotras like Annapurna‑stotram, Shakambhari or Navadurga kavach.
-
-
Food: Take phalahar/vrata‑bhojan once or twice, keeping mind on Devi; avoid anger, gossip, ninda, day‑sleep and dark/black clothing as in many Navratri niyamas.
Special days within Navratri
-
Banada/Banada Ashtami (opening day):
-
Stronger sankalpa, larger vegetable offerings; in Karnataka, Banashankari temples hold abhisheka and special alankara.
-
-
Mid‑days (Navami–Dwadashi):
-
Can add small homa with “श्रीं/ह्रीं/शाकंभरी” mantras or do extra japam and annadaan to poor, cows or brahmanas, emphasising removal of famine and poverty.
-
-
Paush Purnima / Shakambhari Jayanti (final day):
-
Snan (if possible in river/teertha), then full archana, larger bhog of mixed fruits, vegetables and cooked satvic dishes; do Durga Saptashati/Devi‑Mahatmyam path or at least one full stotra, followed by aarti.
-
If feasible, perform small havan with ghee, til, jawar, wheat etc. and chant “ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं क्लीं भगवति माहेश्वरी अन्नपूर्णा स्वाहा” or Shakambhari‑Gayatri given for this festival.
-
Vrata‑samapti and udyapana
-
On Purnima, after final puja:
-
Do kalash‑visarjana, offering that water to tulsi/peepal or in a clean place; distribute barley shoots (jawara) to family and devotees as prasada.
-
Feed girls (Kanya‑pujan) or at least one brahmana/bhakta with satvic food and vegetables; give small dakshina and, if possible, some grains or vegetables as daan in Devi’s name.
-
Only then break stricter vrata‑rules and resume normal diet calmly with gratitude to the Goddess.
