Sanskruti Yuva Pratishthan Dahi Handi Celebrations in Thane will be on August 29, 2013 (Thursday) at 10 AM. Mr Pratap Sarnaik is organising this event at Vartak Nagar, Thane.
Sanskruti Yuva Pratishthan, headed by Pratap Sarnaik organizes Dahi Handi at Vartak Nagar, Thane from the past many years. Various Dahi Handi teams from all over Mumbai-Thane flocked to compete for the Rs 25 lakh Handi in August 2011.
This year according to the organisers they are not thinking it in commercial way and wanted to keep Dahi Handi sport out from commercialisation. One of the organisers said ‘We must treat the festival like a sport. The Marathi manoos is critical of the excessive commercialisation of Gokulashtami. Mandals want to win by forming taller pyramids, often beyond capacity. Sanity must be restored.’
Dahi Handi is celebrated on the next day of Janmashtami. This festival attracts thousands of enthusiastic people from all over Maharashtra to Mumbai and Pune where the celebrations reach their peeks.
Nowadays Dahi Handi or Gopalkala has become compulsory ritual in Janmashtami celebrations. We can understand the importance and social significance of these festivals as that there are some professional groups involved with the celebrations in Mumbai and Pune.
