  2. Mythological Background: The festival commemorates the victory of good over evil, particularly the slaying of the demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna and his consort Satyabhama. It is believed that on this day, Krishna killed Narakasura, liberating many captives and thus marking a day of celebration. Additionally, Goddess Kali is worshipped for her role in defeating evil forces, specifically the demon Raktabija.
  3. Associated Rituals:
    • Abhyang Snan: A traditional oil bath using sesame oil is performed to purify oneself and is believed to wash away sins
    • Ubtan Application: Women apply a special herbal mixture (ubtan) made from gram flour and other natural ingredients to enhance their beauty
    • Lighting Diyas: Earthen lamps (diyas) are lit in homes to symbolize the triumph of light over darkness
