Rathotsava in Shantadurga Temple near Ponda, Goa

Rathotsava in Shantadurga Temple of Kavalem village in Ponda Taluka near Panaji in Goa is organized on Vasant Panchami (Shukla Paksha Panchami in Magh Month). In 2014, Shantadurga Temple Rathotsava date is February 4.

Goddess Shantadurga (Santeri) is a manifestation of Goddess Durga who meditates between Lord Vishnu and Shiva. As per the local legends, during the fierce fight between Lord Shiva and Vishnu Brahma worshipped Goddess Durga to intervene and calm down the both Gods. Goddess Durga appeared between Vishnu and Shiva in the form of Shantadurga and settled the fight.

Shantadurga placed Lord Vishnu on her right hand and Shiva on her left hand to settle their fight. The deity of Shantadurga appears holding two serpents, one in each hand, representing Vishnu and Shiva.

Shantadurga Devi is the Kuldevi for many Konkani Saraswats and Brahmins.

There is another temple for Shantadurga in Sankhwal known as Vijayadurga Temple. It is believed that Shantadurga went to Sankhwal to kill the demons who were harassing the Brahmins.

In 2013, Shantadurga Temple Rathotsava date was February 14. In 2012, Shantadurga Rathotsava date was January 28.
