Rāja Mātaṅgī, also known as Rāja Śyāmalā or Mantrīṇī, serves as the tantric prime minister (mantrī) of Lalitā Tripurasundarī in the Sri Vidya tradition, governing all mantras, speech, arts, and creative knowledge.
According to some traditions, Raja Matangi is worshipped on 9th day of Shyamala Navaratri in Magh Month.
Role
From the Lalitopākhyāna (Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa), she emerges on the war’s second day as Śyāmalā from Lalitā’s left cheek, riding a chariot with Gīticakra (musical wheels of saptasvara), flanked by subordinates like Laghu Śyāmalā (aṅga devatā), Vāgvādinī (upāṅga), Nakulī (pratyāṅga), and Hasantī (sūta). She pierces the Viṣṇu granthi (knot between maṇipūra and anāhata cakras), removing ignorance to prepare devotees for Tripurasundarī’s grace.
Powers and Worship
Residing in anāhata cakra with sūrya maṇḍala, her 18-syllable aṣṭānavatya akṣara mantra from Nityotsava invokes mastery over 64 kalās, vāksiddhi, fame, protection from negativity, and immersion in divine bliss. As Matangi’s royal form, she transcends pollution via ucchiṣṭa worship, embodying both pravṛtti (worldly arts) and nivṛtti (spiritual wisdom).

Cosmic Court Role
In Lalitopākhyāna narratives, she emerges from Lalitā’s left cheek on the war’s second day, riding the Gīticakra chariot to command all mantras, arts, and manifested speech (vaikharī vāk), positioned immediately right of Varahi (army chief) in the Śrī Cakra rājamandala.
