Lord Bhairava Shiva as Bhairavamurthi
Kaal Bhairav Jayanti, also known as Maha Kala Bhairava Jayanthi or Kala Bhairava Ashtami, is believed to be the appearance day of Lord Kaal Bhairav, the fierce form of Lord Shiva. In 2025, Kaal Bhairav Jayanti date is November 12.
It is celebrated on eighth day after Kartik Purnima. Kalabhairava Ashtami falls in Margashirsha month as per North Indian Hindi calendar and in Kartik month as per Kannada, Telugu, Marathi, and Gujarati calendars.
Kaal Bhairav Katha or the story of Kala Bhairava incarnation of Lord Shiva is mentioned in the Shiva Purana. The main objective of Kalabhairava avatar was to behead head-strong Brahma. Kalbhairon appears with a dog as his vehicle.
Significance
- Manifestation of Kaal Bhairav: It is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva took the form of Kaal Bhairav to curb the arrogance of Lord Brahma, who had claimed superiority over other deities. In a display of power, Kaal Bhairav severed one of Brahma’s five heads, which symbolizes the removal of ego and pride.
- Protector and Punisher: Kaal Bhairav is regarded as a protector of devotees and punisher of wrongdoers. He is often depicted riding a dog and holding a rod, symbolizing his role as a guardian against evil forces.

- Fasting: Devotees typically observe a fast on this day, refraining from food and drink to purify themselves spiritually.
- Puja (Worship):
- Morning rituals begin with a holy bath.
- Cleaning the puja area and placing an idol or yantra of Kaal Bhairav.
- Lighting a diya (lamp) with mustard oil and offering sweets such as Meetha Rott and Halwa.
- Reciting prayers and mantras dedicated to Kaal Bhairav, such as “Om Kaal Bhairavaaye Namah” and “Om Kaal Kalaye Vidhmahe”.
- Temple Visits: Many devotees visit Kaal Bhairav temples, especially in regions like Varanasi, where they may participate in elaborate rituals over several days.
- Offerings: It is customary to offer liquor to Kaal Bhairav and food to dogs, reflecting his association with these animals
