Here is the story of Putrada Ekadashi – Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha….
On the request of Maharaja Yudhisthira, who wished to know the significance of the holy day of Ekadashi, Lord Arjuna narrates the story of the pious vrat. He told that there was a king in the Dwapara Yuga, named Mahijit who was the ruler of Mahismati-Puri. He had a vast kingdom, state-loyal subjects, huge wealth and beautiful queen.
The only thing King Mahijit was worried about was not having a son. He often felt anxious of not having an heir for the kingdom. He shares the same with his court advisors. Hearing this, the Brahmin advisors went around ashrams, sages and jungles for benefitting the king.
They came upon Rishi Lomasa, a pure, Vedic-expert and self-controlled sage. He knows past, present and future of each and every person. The Brahmin advisors described the king’s problem with him. Brahmans requested Vedic solutions for nullifying past sins of their King and that their King is blessed with the prince for the kingdom. Lomasa Rishi explains past life of king wherein he denied a cow and its newly born calf to quench their thirst with water of a pond.
Lomasa Rishi advises all of them including King to fast on Ekadashi with proper rules and regulations. On the day of Ekadashi, the King along with all citizens of Mahismati-Puri fasts as per the instructions of Sage Lomasa. With effect of this Vrat, his Queen becomes pregnant and blesses the king with a beautiful son and heir to the kingdom.
Lord Krishna concludes the story to Maharaj Yudhisthira saying that Ekadashi Vrat is thus famous as Putrada Vrat. Whoever fasts on this day of Ekadashi, which falls in the light fortnight of Shravan month, becomes free from all sings, blessed with a good son, attains happiness and ascends heaven after death.
