The Purnagiri Shakti Peeth is dedicated to Mata Purnagiri and is one of the most important Shakti Peethas is India. It is situated at a height of about 3000mts above sea level and is 20 kms from Tanakpur, 171 kms from Pithoragarh and 92 kms from Champawat.
This place is also known as Punyagiri and the river Kali descends into the plains and is known as Sharda.
According to Legend, When Sati immolated herself being unable to bear the insult meted out to Lord Shiva, Shiva began the tandava nrutya (the dance of destruction) and Vishnu had to rip off Sati’s body into pieces in order to calm down Shiva’s anger. During that process the Naval part of Sati fell in this region and hence this place became one of the Shakti Peethas.
The temple fair is organised between the months of Pushya and chaitra during March and thousands of devotees throng the temple in this period. Also during Navratri , many pujas are performed and thousands of devotees visit the temple to have darshan of Mata Purnagiri. Devotees also visit her loyal devotee Bada Sidth Nath’s place at Brahmadev and Mahendra Nagar in Nepal.
Tanakpur is the nearest town to Purnagiri which comes under the Champawat district in Uttarakhand. Tanakpur is well connected by rail and road. After reaching Tanakpur, public transport is availabe till Thulligad. From Thulligad to Tunyas , the road is motorable but not so developed. From Thulligad to Purnagiri is about 3 kms which has to be trekked to reach the Purnagiri Hill.
