Neyyabhishekam is the most important ritual performed by devotees at Sabrimala. This ritual involves the pouring of sacred ghee brought by pilgrims in their irumudi on the idol of Lord Ayyappa. It symbolises the merging of the Jeevatma with the Paramatma, meaning the merging of the devotee with the God.
Neyyabhishekam is performed after having darshan of Lord Ayyappa. The ghee which is used in Neyyabhishem is stuffed in raw dressed coconuts and is carried from homes or temples where the devotee takes up the initiation into the pilgrimage. On reaching the sannidhanam, this ghee is showered on the idol at the temple.
After showering the ghee on the idol, half of the broken coconut is thrown to the fire place called the homa kunda located below the steps leading to the sannidhanam. The other half is taken by the pilgrims to their homes as prasada.
During the sabrimala pilgrimage season, Neyyabhishekam begins early in the morning at 4.15 am and continues till 11.30 in the night. The temple authorities make elaborate arrangements for the pilgrims to perform Neyyabhishekam.
The devotees carry the most essential items required for the puja in a bag called Irumudi on their head. The ghee which is stuffed into the coconut will be carried on the head of the devotee all the way to the hill top temple while chanting the name of Swami Ayyappa. This invokes the devotional element of the devotee into the irumudi and when this coconut is offered to the Lord by way of pouring the ghee on the idol and then putting half of the coconut into the homa kunda, it merges the element of the devotee with the Lord. This is the significance of this ritual Neyyabhishekam.
