Mokshada Ekadashi 2025 | Mauna Ekadasi Vrat

Mokshada Ekadashi, Mauna Ekadasi. Vaishnav Gauna Ekadashi date is 1 December 2025. It is observed on Margashirsha Shukla Ekadasi, the eleventh day in the light fortnight of the Margashira month (November – December).

Mokshada Ekadasi is popularly observed as Gita Jayanthi. On this day the prominent Hindu scripture Bhagvad Geeta was taught by Lord Sri Krishna to Arjuna during the Kurukshetra war.

Mokshada Ekadasi vrat katha or the legend of this Ekadashi is mentioned in the Brahmanda Purana. It is believed that observing Moksada Ekadasi vrata would free dead ancestors from their sins and provides them Moksha or salvation.

On this day, Mauna Vrata is observed hence it is also called as Mauna Ekadashi. Bhagvad Gita, Mukundashtakam, Vishnu Sahasranamam are recited during the Ekadashi day.

Significance of Mokshada Ekadashi

  • Attaining Moksha: Mokshada Ekadashi is considered a powerful day for attaining moksha (liberation) from the cycle of birth and death. Observing this fast is believed to absolve sins and grant spiritual benefits not only to the observer but also to their ancestors.
  • Connection with Gita Jayanti: Mokshada Ekadashi coincides with Gita Jayanti, making it a dual celebration of spiritual significance. Devotees often read and recite the Bhagavad Gita to enhance their spiritual practices on this day.

Rituals and Observances

  1. Fasting: Devotees observe a strict fast, often refraining from food and water, to purify themselves and seek divine blessings.
  2. Puja: Special prayers and rituals are conducted in honor of Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped on this day. Offerings may include flowers, fruits, and sweets.
  3. Recitation of the Gita: Many devotees read or recite verses from the Bhagavad Gita, reflecting on its teachings and significance.
  4. Charity and Good Deeds: Engaging in acts of charity is encouraged, as it is believed to amplify the spiritual benefits gained from fasting.
