Mahalaya Paksha 2011 begins – Ashvin Mahina 2011 begins in North India

Mahalaya Paksha or Pitru Paksha is a fortnight dedicated to dead ancestors. Mahalaya paksha 2011 begins on 13th September 2011. It is the first day of Hindi Ashvin mahina as per North Indian calendars. Pitru Pinda daan or ritualistic rites to dead ancestors is the main ritual of Pitru Paksha. Gaya, Prayag, Varanasi, Rameswaram, Haridwar, Gangotri, etc. are best known holy places for Pinda daan.

“Matru devo bhava”, “Pitru devo bhava” are the prominent verses in Hinduism. These verses say – revere your Mother as God and revere your Father as God. After performing pujas to our forefathers and ancestors, we will worship Goddess Durga during Durga Navratri.
