Koil Alwar Thirumanjanam is the cleansing of the sanctum sanctorum (garbha gudi) of Lord Venkateswara Temple. During this, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) cancels darshan for devotees.
After the usual pre-dawn rituals all the deities excepting the presiding deity of Lord Venkateswara in the sanctum sanctorum are taken to the adjacent chamber and cover with water-proof garments. Priests perform Koil Alwar Thirumanjanam ritual by smearing a rich paste made of refined champor, saffron and sandal wood on the inner walls of the sanctum. After this sacred ritual, the water-proof garments are removed and idols are taken back their places in the sanctum.
